Jersey’s native language of Jèrriais is a variety of Norman. Hearing Jèrriais spoken gives a flavour of the language used by William the Conqueror when he claimed victory at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Wace was a Norman poet and Canon of Bayeux, who was born in Jersey around 1110. Renowned for his epic verses, he brought history and legend to life through his writings on the Battle of Hastings and the legend of King Arthur.
