Lady Elizabeth’s marriage to Sir Anthony Ughtred, Governor of Jersey, would have been enough to ensure her position in Tudor society, but her father was ambitious. He arranged for Elizabeth and her sister, Jane, to join the court of Anne Boleyn. When Anne failed to give King Henry VIII a son and heir, the King’s gaze turned to Jane.
Sister-in-law to a capricious King brought with it position, but also danger. When Sir Anthony died after just four years of marriage, Elizabeth’s second husband was Gregory Cromwell, son of the King’s most trusted advisor, Sir Thomas Cromwell – until he wasn’t! With her father-in-law in prison in the Tower of London, Elizabeth wrote to Henry reassuring him of her and her husband’s loyalty.
Married for a third time to Sir John Paulet, Elizabeth has returned to Mont Orgueil to visit her husband’s cousin, Sir Hugh Paulet, who is the Island’s Governor.
