1781 Jersey Militia

A thrilling display of artillery and Georgian life

  • Elizabeth Castle

The 1781 Jersey Militia Living History Group offers a fascinating opportunity to immerse yourself in the life of a soldier and his family during the Georgian era at Elizabeth Castle.

Being part of the Georgian militia required a wide array of skills, including marksmanship, artillery operation, tactical knowledge, and fortification maintenance. It was a demanding job, with a focus on discipline, teamwork, and readiness for combat. The artillery was a critical aspect of defending the Castle, and soldiers had to be skilled in its use for both defence and offense during periods of conflict.

Join the Militia and witness the thrilling fire of the musket, daily drills and learn why uniforms played an important role. Hear about the living conditions of life in the barracks, including the food they ate, and what it was like living ‘up close and personal’ with your fellow militia men.

If seeing the 1781 Jersey Militia is going to be the highlight of your trip to Elizabeth Castle, please call +44 (0)1534 634 048 before you visit to check that performances are confirmed for that date.
