‘La Tèrr’rie d’Jèrri – d’s histouaithes dé not’ Île’ (Being Jersey – stories of our Island), which opened to the public last September, has won the award for the interior design of its gallery space, which was commissioned by Jersey Heritage working with exhibition design specialists Nissen Richards Studio.

The Better Future London Design Awards recognise extraordinary design across a range of categories. The Interior Design – Gallery Award that ‘La Tèrr’rie d’Jèrri’ has won is open to all international projects and celebrates innovation and creative building interiors, with consideration given to space creation and planning, furnishings, finishes, aesthetic presentation and functionality. Consideration is also given to space allocation, traffic flow, building services, lighting, fixtures, flooring, colours, furnishings and surface finishes.

Alongside ‘La Tèrr’rie d’Jèrri’, this year’s other Gold Award winners for the Interior Design – Gallery category include the Chang’an Cloud Belt and Road Exhibition Centre in China; ‘Banan’, The Saudi International Handcrafts Week in Saudi Arabia; and Shenzhen Science & Technology Museum Entrance Design in China.

Louise Downie, Jersey Heritage’s Director of Curation & Experience, said: “The wonderful feedback about ‘La Tèrr’rie d’Jèrri’ that we have received from visitors to Jersey Museum since the new exhibition opened has already been reward for the months of hard work that went into revamping the gallery space to give it a fresh look and feel, and to researching and creating the exciting new displays. The Gold Award from the London Design Awards is the icing on the cake and is richly deserved by everyone involved in the project. Our thanks go to all those who helped us to create this new exhibition that celebrates our special Island, especially Nissen Richards Studio, who led the exhibition’s design that is now receiving international recognition.”

Other companies involved in the creation of ‘La Tèrr’rie d’Jèrri’ include Studio ZNA (lighting design); MER (setworks contractor); Floria D.sign (showcases); Elbow (AV software); D J Willrich (AV hardware); V&V Builders & Stonemasons (basebuild contractor); Ennis (mechanical and engineering); and Lucy Harland, Lucidity Media (interpretation consultant).

Pippa Nissen, Director of Nissen Richards Studio, said: “This was such an enjoyable project for everyone in our studio. We were very inspired in our designs by the Island’s natural beauty, archaeology and fascinating history. Working with the passionate and informed Jersey Heritage team made the design evolutions a real joy. We couldn’t be more pleased with this notable award win for such a deserving project.”

The ‘La Tèrr’rie d’Jèrri’ exhibition, which is on the first floor of Jersey Museum, shares some of the Island’s most significant moments and discovers how living in Jersey has affected the lives of just a few of the millions of people who have been part of its history.

The new displays range from prehistoric mammoth skulls and dwarf red deer bones to gold torques, royal charters, items from the Battle of Jersey and Occupation years, and times when Jersey attracted artists, honeymooners and holidaymakers. As well as key collection pieces on display, the exhibition includes a specially commissioned soundscape, two bespoke art installations and audio-visual content that helps to share some of Jersey’s stories.

‘La Tèrr’rie d’Jèrri’ is open daily at Jersey Museum and entry is FREE.
