The Island’s rich medieval history will be brought to life by Jersey Heritage this May half term with an exciting new family event at Mont Orgueil Castle.
‘Medieval Revels’ – ‘Lé Rêvillon du Mouoyen Âge’ in Jèrriais – will include thrilling live battle shows, music and plenty of hands-on activities for Islanders of all ages to enjoy. The four-day event, which is kindly sponsored by Ogier, will take place at the 13th-century castle from Monday to Thursday, 25-28 May, 10am-4pm daily.
Nicola Lucas, Jersey Heritage’s Community Events Curator, said: “The clash of steel and the roar of battle as knights in armour storm the battlements of Mont Orgueil – who wouldn’t want to be at the Castle to experience that! ‘Medieval Revels’ promises to be a thrilling event and we have four days of fun and entertainment lined up for families to enjoy over half term.
“Those who enter the Castle’s walls will be transported back to the 13th century to soak up a bustling medieval atmosphere. Our expert re-enactors, who have performed across Europe and the UK, will showcase the skills, tactics and spectacle of medieval combat. There will also be a medieval physician, who will reveal the cures, remedies and superstitions of the time, and a medieval cook, who will share insights into historic food preparation and life in the castle kitchens. A medieval scribe will show Islanders the calligraphy of the time, and there will be plenty of other activity to keep families busy throughout their visit.”
The knights in armour live battles will take place daily at 12pm and 3pm and musicians will perform from 10am-12pm each day.
Activities throughout the day will include:
- hobby horse jousting
- brass rubbing
- learn the Bayeaux Tapestry stitch
- a ‘pilgrimage trail’ to find the mythical beasts of Mont Orgueil
The Mont Orgueil Castle café will be open for refreshments and wooden swords and shields will be on sale in the Lower Ward.
Kate Kirk, Ogier’s Marketing Director, said: “We are proud to continue working with Jersey Heritage this year to bring together the community and celebrate the Island’s rich history. ‘Medieval Revels’ at Mont Orgueil is an exciting new addition to the charity’s events programme and offers families and would-be knights and princesses of all ages an opportunity to share some unforgettable experiences over May half term. With a host of expert re-enactors on hand to entertain everyone, it promises to be a thrilling way to learn about medieval life inside an iconic medieval castle.”
