Edouard Alho was one of the first Portuguese workers to come to Jersey in 1934. Eduardo came to the Island from Camara de Lobos in Madeira to work as a waiter and then a head waiter at the Merton Hotel. In the war years he returned to Portugal, but came back to Jersey in 1948 and married a local girl, Betty. During the 50s and 60s he saw Jersey tourism grow and the Merton become the largest hotel in the Channel Islands. Edouard retired in 1984, after 50 years service at the Merton Hotel.
