American Connections - Theodore Faxton Gardner
Theodore Faxton Gardner was born on 8 April 1844 in Utica, New York. In 1865 Theodore, aged 21, is living with his family in Utica, New York. He is described as a teacher.
In 1872 Theodore applied for a passport wishing to travel to ‘Great Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Greece and other countries in Europe’. Whilst on his travels Theodore met Estelle Aimee Eugene Boulay in Paris and in 1874 she became his wife. The couple’s daughter Theodora was born in Paris in 1876.
Immigration records show that the family travelled between America and the UK in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Theodore’s alien’s registration card, kept at Jersey Archive, shows that he arrived in the UK in 1909 and gives his previous address as 251, West 81st Street, New York City.
In total Theodore makes 8 applications during his time in Jersey to renew his American Passport. In his applications he lists his arrival date in Jersey as August 13th 1911 and states that he is residing in Jersey for the purpose of his health.
In the 1911 census Theodore is listed as living in Jersey at 41, La Motte Street with his wife of 36 years Estellle, who was to die in 1931 at the age of 91 and their daughter Theodora. Theodore is listed as a retired teacher.
In June 1920 he was living in Jersey at La Motte Street and moved to Claremont Terrace, Mont Millais in 1933. He died on 2nd March 1936 at the age of 91.
Theodore’s daughter Theodora remained in Jersey and was naturalised as a British subject in 1924. She never married and in her will and testament she leaves money to a number of Jersey institutions including £200 to the Jersey Animal Shelter, £200 to the Jersey Blind Society and £100 to the National Trust for Jersey.
