Geopark and Landscape Engagement Curator

You’ll help conserve and interpret Jersey’s geological, natural and cultural heritage, manage communications and the Visitor Centre, and deliver exhibitions, events and education programmes.

 The aspiring Jersey Island Geopark is seeking UNESCO Global Geopark accreditation in recognition of our Island’s internationally important geology, landscapes, natural environment and heritage. This role forms part of the team who, since 2021, have been developing the Jersey Island Geopark in preparation for an application for UNESCO Geopark status.

What you will deliver

Making an Impact

Working with colleagues you will work towards achieving UNESCO Global Geopark status for Jersey, recognising the international significance of Jersey’s geology, landscapes, natural environment and cultural heritage.

You will assist with the ensuring that Jersey’s geological heritage is conserved and safeguarded. You will help promote Jersey as a destination for geotourism.

You will engage with the international Geopark network to share learning and experiences. This includes attending international conferences and workshops and promoting the aspiring Jersey Island Geopark with colleagues across the community.

You will work with other members of the Geopark team to facilitate and progress Jersey’s application to become a UNESCO Global Geopark.

You will work with the Geopark team, colleagues and partners on the management and delivery of the Geopark Strategy and Activity Plan.

Communication and Collaboration

In working towards the aims of UNESCO Global Geopark, you will build and maintain relationships with partners locally, nationally and internationally, undertaking consultation where appropriate. You will keep all partners appropriately involved and informed in the Geopark’s development and activities.

You will work with colleagues on the management of the Geopark Visitor Centre.

You will work with the Geopark team and others on the management and delivery of the Geopark communications and marketing strategy.

You will assist the Head of Geopark in maintaining and evolving the Geopark’s relationship with Jersey Heritage. This includes, where relevant, reporting to the Jersey Heritage Board of Trustees and contributing to the annual Jersey Heritage Business Plan.

Sharing heritage

You will seek out and deliver opportunities for public engagement with Jersey’s geological, natural and heritage landscape via exhibitions, displays, talks, signage, festivals, events, digital media, walks, trails, publications, etc.

You will explore creative and innovative ways of sharing Jersey’s heritage and landscape stories with the public in an engaging and memorable way.

You will work with the Jersey Heritage Education Team to develop and deliver learning about Jersey’s natural and geological landscape and issues related to the environment and conservation.

Working with others, you will develop and support the delivery of interpretational, educational and responsible tourism via events, activities, exhibitions, etc. You will increase the social, cultural and economic impact of Jersey’s heritage by introducing new audiences to the Island’s geological, natural and historic landscape.

You will represent JH publicly on matters relating to the Geopark project.

You will manage the Geopark’s social media presence and website.

Evaluation and Development

During and following completion of projects you are involved with, you will instigate or participate in project reviews and evaluations that identify successful and unsuccessful project elements and produce recommendations for improvement.

You will comply with and promote knowledge of health and safety legislation and other related procedures to manage and minimise risk in daily operations in relation to yourself, public, staff, volunteers, contractors and others.

Financial Performance

You will assist with managing the annual Geopark budget and the monitoring of current spend.

You will support wider fundraising initiatives as required.  You will strive to be efficient and ensure cost effectiveness in all the work that you do.

You will work with the Commercial Operations Team to identify possible income-generating initiatives and content.

You will ensure that all interpretation produced across the programme is accessible and fit for purpose. You will ensure that there are opportunities to share stories from a range of voices, especially those that may have been absent in the past.

Confidentiality

You must be aware that you have an explicit responsibility towards the confidentiality and security of information received and imported in the course of your work including when using the Jersey Island Geopark Organisation Limited’s and Jersey Heritage’s information assets.

You are required not to divulge to anyone any personal and/or confidential information to which you may have access during the course of your work.

Knowledge, Skills and experience needed

Excellent written and verbal communication skills. The ability to moderate and adjust these for delivery to different audiences and to adapt to user needs.

Knowledge of and enthusiasm for Jersey’s natural, cultural and intangible heritage, landscape and seascape.

Ability to think imaginatively and creatively.

Excellent planning and delivery capability including an ability to manage, organise and prioritise workloads.

Excellent interpersonal skills.

Strong ability to work alone or as part of a team, to understand the roles and needs of other colleagues, partners, stakeholders and external providers.

Highly effective collaborative, resilience and relationship management skills.

The ability to manage and motivate people in a supportive and inspirational way.

A positive, flexible and ‘can do’ attitude.

Educated to degree level in a subject area related to earth sciences, the environment, ecology or geography.

Knowledge of and confidence when using IT. This should include proficiency with core Microsoft products (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or their equivalent and, ideally, a familiarity with GIS and creative software.

Ability to create and nurture local, national, regional and international connections with collaborators, partners and stakeholders to support the Geopark’s development.

Experience of working on multidisciplinary projects.

A willingness to work outside normal office hours and at other locations where required.

Experience in undertaking and delivering research.

A full, clean driver’s license.

Knowledge of the UNESCO Global Geopark framework is desirable.
