This is a new addition to the museum collection, an embroidered tablecloth/napkin.
On the bottom left-hand corner, hand-sewn in blue thread, is text by the creator reading “MADE IN JERSEY PRISON UNDER GERMAN OCCUPATION, JULY 1943. W. N. MYLNE.”
Looking at the archive records, we can see there is a registration card for one Winifred Nellie Mylne, nee Gower. Further research provides a sentencing document by the Field Command and Troop Courts in 1943 for failing to surrender a wireless set. In the same document we can see that her daughter Vivienne Mylne and her husband Clement Noble Mylne were sentenced at the same time.
Her husband was a methodist minister from Leytonstone, London. He was sentence by Court Martial on the 26th of February 1943 to one year’s imprisonment and a fine of 300 RM for failing to surrender a wireless set but was later transferred to the General Hospital on the 10th of August 1943 and was discharged on 22nd September, owing to ill health.
Her daughter, Vivenne Mylne, is listed as a schoolteacher, born in Chao-T’ong (West China) and was sentences to 10 months imprisonment for failing to surrender a camera and for dissemination of information hostile to Germany.
