Ice age Island with Dr Matt Pope

Dr Matt Pope FSA MCIfA is the Principal Research Fellow in Palaeolithic Archaeology and Senior Geoarchaeologist at UCL.

1. La Manche Neanderthals.

A Quick Tour of Ice Age Sites from Jersey and North-West France Dr Matt Pope will introduce you to some of the key Neanderthal sites from the region, including La Cotte de St Brelade, and will explore why the record is so rich and what we might be missing under the waves.

Dr Chantal Conneller of Newcastle University takes a closer look at the engraved schist plaquettes – said to be the earliest art in the British Isles – recovered from Les Varines and the analysis that has done using scientific methods to explore the production of designs, and use and deposition of the stones.

It’s been 80 years since a fleet of small boats left Jersey to rescue soldiers and civilians from German forces in St Malo and heritage boat Diana played a role in this operation.
