Christening Robe, c.1890

Christening robes became elaborate works of art and skill during the 19th Century. The church at that time insisted that all babies be christened in white as a sign of their innocence and purity.

Intricate white work patterns and lace were lovingly used on fine white cotton lawn and towards the end of the century the skirts became more lavishly decorated with robings and elaborate embroidery up the centre front panel.
