The first annual survey of Jersey’s historic environment has been published by Jersey Heritage. ‘Heritage Counts 2014’ brings together information and data about the state of the Island’s historic environment to help us better understand and show the value of heritage and its contribution to our lives and local economy. The evidence collected demonstrates heritage has a positive impact in many ways – enriching our quality of life, enhancing local pride in our cultural identity, contributing to our knowledge, and as an asset for economic development. The report will help in guiding future work and resources to deal both with the challenges and opportunities facing the historic environment.
Case studies highlight examples of positive heritage work that is being undertaken – such as the agreement with Jersey Post to safeguard the Island’s historic post boxes, the conversion of Liberty Wharf and the St James Centre into a contemporary shopping experience and community arts facility respectively whilst respecting the historic fabric and character of the buildings, and the success of the refurbishment of a number historic sites into holiday lets which both protects their future and generates income to help pay for the care of more historic sites.
