Islanders can show their love for Elizabeth Castle this September by taking part in the Hawksford Castle Chase 2021, which is on again after a break last year due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Castle Chase, which is kindly sponsored by Hawksford, is Jersey’s only lunchtime beach trail race for a cause. It involves relay teams of two racing from the shore at West Park out to Elizabeth Castle at low tide. It’s a “harder than it looks” distance of two miles across the sand, up to the Castle’s Parade Ground and back. It is being run in association with Trail Monkey and takes place on Wednesday, 22 September from 12.30pm to 1.30pm. Organisers describe is as “the toughest lunch hour you’ll ever have!”

The annual challenge raises money for the ‘Love Your Castle’ project, which supports plans for vital restoration work to conserve and protect Elizabeth Castle. Jonathan Carter, Jersey Heritage’s Chief Executive, said: “The Hawksford Castle Chase is a great challenge – it involves one Castle, two up-hills and lots of sweat! It’s also a fantastic way to get involved in our project to restore Elizabeth Castle, one of the Island’s most important and iconic landmarks. The Castle is cared for by Jersey Heritage but it belongs to Islanders and together we can make sure that it is preserved for future generations to enjoy.”

Runners can sign up for the Hawksford Castle Chase at https://race-nation.co.uk/register/jersey-heritage/the-hawksford-castle-chase-2021. It costs £20 for a team of two, with discounts available for companies or organisations entering five or more teams. The closing date for entries is 21 September 2021.

Cherith Fothergill, Global Head of Marketing and Business Development at Hawksford, said: “We can’t wait for this year’s return of the Hawksford Castle Chase! With one of the Island’s most iconic backdrops, this challenging lunchtime race is a firm favourite for the community and one that Hawksford love to be involved with. We look forward to welcoming new and familiar faces taking part, and all the while raising funds to support the restoration of Elizabeth Castle.”
