A 96-YEAR-OLD former teacher, Bob Le Sueur, has challenged Jersey people to sign up for the ‘2017 Mont Orgeuil Climbathon’ and raise £44,000 for re-building a medical & community centre in West Nepal's earthquake zone. Bob Le Sueur is hoping many families, teams and individuals in Jersey will take part in this event, organised by Gurkha Welfare Trust Jersey in association with Jersey Heritage Trust. All entrants receive a wrist band, badge and certificate for their achievement, plus Jersey Heritage Trust Members have the opportunity to win an exclusive Gurkha Trophy, awarded to one Member who achieves the most climbs.
Why support this event? Gurkha's defended our freedom and liberty during two World Wars and many other conflicts, fighting alongside British soldiers. Unlike the regular Army Gurkha's don't receive any Army pension and rely on our support. The 2015 earthquake in Nepal devastated their infrastructure and this county remains amongst the poorest in the world. From many West Nepal villages it requires a two-day hike to reach any medical centre, needless to say unfortunately many don't make it back to their homes. This project will bring a medical centre back onto the doorsteps of many Gurkhas and Nepalese villagers.
The ‘Conquer the Castle’ event will take place on Saturday 9 September and Sunday 10 September at Mont Orgueil. All are welcome - families, teams and individuals - to complete as many circuits as you can achieve and having fun, while raising funds for a very worthwhile cause. Every pound you donate or raise in sponsorship will be kindly doubled by Jersey Overseas Aid Commission and all goes directly to the project, substantially increasing your contribution. We are delighted the Gurkha Welfare Trust Jersey Patron, Lieutenant Governor Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton, is taking part on Sunday afternoon and from 5.00pm will be presenting Winners with their Trophies.
