Mont Orgueil Castle


The Eagle has Landed

Lady Ann Hayden will entertain and educate as she demonstrates the Tudor pastime of hawking with her prized birds of prey Skaoi, Malachi and Lady Gwynevere. As the afternoon draws on, the good Lady’s eagle, Wilhemina, will grace the scene with her presence.


Tudor Military Weapons

The castle’s Tudor Master Gunner, John Coffin, has a range of 16th century edged weapons and firepower at his disposal to enlighten visitors in his skilful yet deadly craft. Discover the history and mysteries of gunpowder, and poise, fingers close to ears, when John fires the swivel gun in the Cornish Bastion at 12 pm and 2 pm.

A Fisherman's Tale

Meet Gorey fisherman Philippe Hamon in the Lower Ward for gossip and hear stories from the castle’s checkered history.

Lady de la Fontaine

Lady de la Fontaine will instruct you in the medieval art of calligraphy. Try your hand at embroidery or brass rubbing.

Medieval Life

Step back in time to the 15th century to meet members of the Companie of the Duke’s Leopards.

A Fletcher’s Family

Master Mick has to work hard to provide for his medieval family. He has developed many skills and can be seen fletching arrows and producing leather goods.

Tudor Master Gunner and Bess Coffin

Master Gunner John Coffin and his good wife, Bess, provide a fascinating insight into 16th century social history. Throughout the day, Master Coffin will be ready to talk about Tudor weapons and to discuss his campaign tactics. Bess, a skilled cook who is adept at preparing medicinal and herbal cures, will also entertain and inform.

Laurens Hamptonne changed the course of British history when he had the great honour of being the first to declare young Prince Charles (II) the future King of England. Meet him as he prepares this historic document of proclamation and readies Royalist Jersey for war.

Spinning a Yarn

Spinning and knitting have provided a lucrative business in Jersey for centuries. Maureen and Irene offer a fascinating insight into the history and the trade of knitted goods. A chance too to purchase some hand spun goodies.

Lace and Bobbins

Polly Bartram is a refined 18th century lady proficient in the social skills expected of a woman of her class. Discover the origins of lace and marvel at the exquisite work she produces.

Abraham and Polly Bartram

Meet Abraham, an 18th century Militiaman, as he prepares for an imminent French invasion. His wife, Polly, provides support during this rare off-duty moment.

Flour Power

Watch our bakers hard at work kneading dough for our famous Jersey cabbage loaves.  Sample the delicious hot bread as it is brought out of the old brick oven.

Creature Comforts

Jonathan cares for the Hamptonne animals. He is an organic dairy farmer with his own farm and dairy herd to tend. Talk to him about the history of farming in Jersey, meet the animals and help bottle-feed the cute and dainty calves.

Quality Quilts

The Caesarea Quilters’ Group will be demonstrating their work throughout the season. Items of traditional handiwork will be available to buy.

Elizabeth Castle

Gunner Gilman

Master Gunner ‘Gilly’ Gilman is always on the prowl for recruits to join his Invalid Battalion. In the 18th century, men aged 16 to 65 were expected to protect the Island from the ever-present threat of French invasion. Join Gilly in the Parade Ground at lunchtime for drill practice and the chance to fire one of the few black powder cannons in use today. Your Island needs you!

Gunner Blake

This old soldier has been in many overseas campaigns but now proudly defends his Island from the imminent threat of French invasion. Expect to be mustered for drill practice in the parade ground.

Soldiers of the King

An extravaganza of 18th century military life. Master Gunner Gates inspects his men on parade and during drill practice. Witness the competition as they fire three shots a minute with the Brown Bess and then settle their arguments with a pistol duel. Join them for the parade and firing of the black powder cannon.

Jersey Militia, 4th Regiment, 2nd Battalion (St Lawrence)

The Battle of Jersey took place on 6 January 1781. The French landed at La Rocque and proceeded to St Helier where the battle took place in the Royal Square. The Jersey Militia was among the regiments who defeated the invading force. Join them, their wives and children for a thrilling display of artillery and Georgian life.

Keeping Afloat

This is the only place on the Island to watch the ancient and declining art of boatbuilding, as the team restore Jersey Heritage’s classic boat collection.

Annette Lowe’s film of the building of the Circassian II, a replica 1860s fishing boat, is screened throughout the day in the Cinema of the Sea.
